One Coronation Street “wild child” who appeared on the ITV soap for 14 years was left struggling for cash after three divorces.
A Coronation Street actress who appeared on the soap for an incredible 14 years was left penniless and forced to drive taxis for a living after acting work dried up. Jennifer Moss shot to fame as a teenager when she appeared on the ITV soap as Lucille Hewitt – best known as the rebel child who ran away from an orphanage to live with her father Harry on the cobbles.
But off-screen, actress Jennifer was struggling. When her father died, she sank into alcoholism and was unable to continue working – and was sacked by Granada Television after more than 700 episodes. Divorced three times, her second husband sadly took his own life. Jennifer faced further tragedy when her son died aged just three weeks.
Her baby daughter was born with brain damage due to her drinking throughout her pregnancy, and both she and another child were taken into care.
Jennifer later faced a battle with cervical cancer, and was forced to take odd jobs to get by – working as a waitress, a taxi driver, a tour guide for Corrie and a chatline hostess.
Jennifer eventually moved to Liverpool – because the city had 28 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week. She eventually got herself sober, living in housing provided by the Merseyside Housing Improvement Trust.
In her later years, despite a few roles in shows like Brookside and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Jennifer decided to leave the acting world behind and settled down with her fifth husband, Stephen Ramsden, to run an online stamp-collection business.
She died at the age of 61 in 2006, at her home in Scotland. Before her death she had thankfully been able to reconcile with her daughter Naomi, and became a grandmother.
